It's a wrap for 2024, and as we gear up for new releases and more from the creatives we love, we ought to do a quick recap of the year that was. That's in terms of movies, of which there were a few memorable ones from 2024. Here's what I think were some of the best movies we saw in 2024 so that if you missed out on any, you can catch up and start the year on a fresh slate. I have indicated the genre because this list has practically everything in it, get ready get ready (insert THAT meme here...)
2024's Most Memorable Releases
Here are the releases from 2024 that we absolutely loved, based on a consensus that we came to on Tuesday at the studio. Each person contributed one movie title, and some films actually got more than one mention. Here are the films and what the person who suggested the film thought about it. Keep in mind that there will be some meddling and interjections from me because I wrote this hehee...
On Air (True Story/Thriller)
This is one of the movies that got multiple mentions across the board, and so it's also the first one on our list. I wrote a non-spoiler review on it here, and I'fusion wrote about the podcast with Edu G (Edwin Nyongesa here if you'd like to check them out. Simple in its execution and efficient in portraying the real-life event from 2011 on which it was based, we know that consumers of Kenyan film media will love it as much as we did.
Damsel (Action/Adventure)
This movie's title is a giveaway of what the movie is about since the story's setting is medieval. You're likely to enjoy it if you like adventure movies and fantasy themes in film. It follows the damsel who agrees to get married to a suitor that her parents picked for her. It turns out that the parents lied (yet another reason why you should ALWAYS suspect your elders). The task that they actually need her for is to be a sacrifice, an honor for which the Royal Family selected her; secretly... If you like adventure films, this is one that's likely worth watching.
Inside Out Two (Family/Comedy/Adventure)
If you liked the first installation of Inside Out, you're going to love the second one. That's because the little voices inside Riley's head; joy, anger, sadness, fear, and disgust are in for a ride. This ride is proudly sponsored by anxiety, which becomes an additional emotion to regulate. The ups and downs are every bit as vivid as you'd imagine when you think back to the time you had your first-ever anxiety attack. The fact that this is a family movie makes it impressive when you acknowledge how it enables younger viewers to grasp the context of emotions. Teachable moments in bite-sized packaging ensure that Inside Out never feels like actually learning, and bonus points because these are what the experts call "soft skills." So if you're set on watching it and you know some children, do the honorable thing and watch it with them.
Transformers One (Animation/Action/Family)
If you've watched any of The Transformers, you already know that this is a good one. It takes us back to the origins, the very start when Megatron and Optimus Prime were actually friends. Must-watch, right??? The soundtrack is on-point, as is the art design for the soundtrack. That's definitely a detail for the die-hard fans who appreciate every extra touch in film, as one volunteer said that this is one of the movies that they wouldn't have a lot of negative critiques for.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Fiction)
Just watch this one if you haven't already watched it. Like the previous movie in this list, this one takes us back to the past. !segue alert! There seems to be a lot of this; with the Lion King-based Mufasa following a similar script of returning to the beninginning. Do we have a future? If even film can't imagine it vividly and in a way that's both entertaining and sensible, with a solid plot and poignant soundtracks...? End of segue. This was an amazing movie, and if you enjoyed Fury Road, you'll double-enjoy this one.
Deadpool vs Wolverine (Action/Comedy/Superhero)
Marvel Studios gave fans an epic one with this one, where Deadpool's path crosses with Wolverine's. The Time Variance Authority calls upon Deadpool to help keep the multiverse safe, which is how he ends up in Wolverine's company. There's a lot of humor, as is to be expected anywhere Deadpool is. This movie truly lives up to its hype with amazing cinematography and lots of action, so if you were on the fence about watching it, take this as an encouragement to get to it.
What Do You Think?
Have you seen any of these movies, and what did you think about it/them? Next week, we're going to get into some amazing movies that we've seen and that are a bit older than 2024 but every bit worth it. If you know any notable movies, let us know so that we can watch them and consider including them in the next listicle that we write, otherwise, be ye entertained!
